$$gamma$$-$$gamma$$ coincidence of multiple $$gamma$$-rays from the radioisotopes produced by neutron capture reactions was measured with a array of 19-Ge detectors with BGO Compton suppressors, GEMINI-II. Using multiparameter spectrometry, high sensitive determination of iridium in geological samples and I-129 in environmental samples were carried out at GEMINI.

Development of analytical method for plutonium in high active liquid waste solution by high performance spectrophotometry

Jitsukata, Shu*; *; ; ; Kurosawa, A.

JNC TN8410 2001-002, 66 Pages, 2000/12

JNC-TN8410-2001-002.pdf:2.03MB

It was required from IAEA to determine a small amount of plutonium in the high active liquid waste solutions (HALW) in the tokai reprocessing plant. High performance spectrophotometer (HPSP), which could be obtained lower detection limit than conventional spectrophotometer, is studied to be applied to the inspection and verification analysis by the IAEA. [Cold Test] Neodymium, showing an absorption peak near the absorption wavelength of plutonium (VI), was used as an alternative element to plutonium, in order to review the calculation method of the peak intensity. As a result, the three-point correction method was found to be simple and effective. [Hot Test] Plutonium nitrate solution was used the fundamental test of this method. Since the method is known to be influenced by acidity, suspended sludge and coexistent elements in a sample, each dependency was examined. It was found that measurement results varied about 14% at a nitric acid concentration of 2-4 mol/L. Sludge should be removed by filtration before the measurement. The effect of coexisting elements could be eliminated adjusting the optical balance between reference and sample beam intensity. In the case of measuring a low concentration plutonium solution sample, a ratio of the peak intensity to the background intensity (S/B ratio) is relatively small. Therefore a method should be improved the S/B ratio by analyzing the obtained spectra. Accumulated average method, moving average method and Fourier transform method was tested. The results showed that a combination of the accumulated average method and the moving average method was the optimum method for the purpose. Linearity of the calibration curve was found between 0-11 mgPu/L. Synthetic sample solution, which simulated the actual constituents of the HALW with plutonium showed a good linear relation at 0-11 mgPu/L. The detection limit for plutonium concentration was 0.07 mgPu/L. When the synthetic HALW solution containing plutonium was measured, the de

Report on development of aroma measurement technology specific to agricultural products

Tokizawa, Takayuki; Miyagawa, Hiroshi*

no journal, ,

A study on "Flavour mapping", which is a three-dimensional evaluation of "taste" and "aroma," started in fiscal 2017 as a joint project with Mimasaka University. In 2019, JAEA used the JAEA-licensed product Nikkin Flux Inc.'s highly sensitive gas mass spectrometer (BressMass; Nikkin Flux Inc., trademark) to produce the flavor immediately before the inclusion of food in the country. With respect to (Pione, ginger, wheat food ingredients (roll cake, bread, udon), baked chestnuts, edamame, and sake, etc.), measurement was made with respect to differences from farmland and food from other regions. The aroma components were estimated from the published spectrum database, and the principal component analysis was performed from the obtained mass spectrum, and the difference in the aroma due to the difference in the farm and the production area was evaluated.

Sensitive measurement of uranium isotope ratios by MC-ICP-MS

Tomita, Jumpei; Tomita, Ryohei; Suzuki, Daisuke; Yasuda, Kenichiro; Miyamoto, Yutaka

no journal, ,

Isotopic ratios of uranium particle provide us with the information on the nuclear activities such as enrichment and reprocessing. Precise determination of U isotopic ratios is difficult due to the low intensity of $$^{238}$$U measured by Faraday cup when pico-gram quantities of uranium was measured by MC-ICP-MS. In this study, the sensitive measurement of the 1-20 pg of uranium was examined. The solution was prepared by only 0.2 mL, which was one-tenth compared to the conventional method, to increase U concentration. Data acquisition was started from the beginning of the solution uptake and continued until all solution was exhausted. The isotopic ratios of uranium were calculated from the total counts of each isotope excepting the portion affected by air mixing at the beginning and end of sample introduction. Uranium isotopic ratios of CRM U015 and IRMM184 determined by this method examined in this study were agreed with the certified values within the uncertainties (2-sigma). The uncertainties obtained by this method were smaller than those by the conventional method.
